We decided to use Adobe Photoshop to make our collage in as we felt it would make it easier to create a high-quality project that could display what we wanted it to. We decided to have the hands holding the world in the middle as we felt Like our literacy has changed us to make us a better person in total. Our literacy has made us better for life rather than just specific parts of life. Both of our literacy sponsors were teachers which are represented by the hands holding the earth. The background stands for Catie’s love for poetry and Brandon ‘s now understanding of the English language. We decided to make our differences be on the opposite sides of the hands with the earth. On Catie’s side is an American flag representing her always being able to Speak English and Brandon’s learning on the English language. The broken heart on top of the full heart is Catie learning to her own emotions such as love through poetry. The plant represents Catie’s growth and how she has grown so much as a person with the help of her literacy sponsor. Brandon chose two simple emojis to represent himself. Many people use this smiley face emoji among the Chinese social media. People used it quite often in the past. However, the usage rate rapidly dropped after people Developed a new understanding of this emoji — the fake smile. Because when people smile, the facial muscles would make eyes to close a little bit, but this one isn’t. The reason that Brandon picked this one because when he first came here, he barely spoke any English, therefore, when other people were trying to talk him or tell him a joke, he’d laugh to make them think he understood when he actually had no idea what they were talking about. For the second emoji, it has an argument of how it should be interpreted — high five or praying. In this circumstance, he interpreted the former one. He believes high five is the action that people mostly do with their friends. Since he’s lived here for a couple years, his English skill has become better than before, therefore, he gradually started to understand what they’re saying and make friend with them.
