Project 5 Poster Extension Painting
For this extension project, I chose to paint my interpretation of what a psychedelic experience would be like based on my research findings and a quote, and used a painting, done by someone while on acid, as my inspiration. First, my research was on the affects psychedelics have on your creative thinking and artistic ability. I found that psychedelics do impact your creative thinking and artistic ability in a positive way as well as open your eyes to new beauty around you. Many artists felt they had a greater use of colors, so from that, I focused my painting on the bright colors, as well as making it slightly abstract so the attention isn’t on what it is, and more of the beauty of the colors. I also wanted to leave more room for personal interpretation. “Psychedelic drugs give me a sense of harmony and beauty. For the first time in my life, I can take pleasure in the beauty of a leaf; I can find meaning in the processes of nature. For me to paint an ugly picture would be a lie. It would be a violation of what I have learned through psychedelic experience.” – Isaac Abrams. This quote was also what inspired my interpretation. ‘A sense of harmony and beauty’, inspired me to choose the colors I did and put them together in a way that ‘harmonizes’. My painting gives off a sense of peace and calmness to me. It’s almost like watching the clouds during a sunset, ‘finding meaning in the processes of nature’. I really enjoyed the painting experience, even though I was NOT on any type of psychedelic drug while painting it, I felt the same things that the artists felt in the 91-artist survey and the surveys conducted by myself. While painting this picture, I started to notice the same type of beauty in the real world and can understand the greater appreciation the artists who take psychedelics, feel for life.
