The ‘Normanno Wedge’ can be discovered on the tiny hill in front of Artzen Hall & Starbucks on South Campus. When first encountering the sculpture it can be viewed in a various amount of ways. We see it as a wedge being hammered in representing nature fighting back and saying that it will not falter against industrialization. The artist, Beverly Pepper, is known for her giant pieces of industrial sculptures, placed straight into different environments around the world. When we first encountered this sculpture, we found a humorous meaning behind it. After researching Beverly Pepper, we discovered that the meaning behind this work is to emphasize the population increase and industrialization of mankind. Every time mankind decides to industrialize and urbanize the environment that surrounds us, we are slowing killing nature. Pepper wanted Normanno Wedge to be located on a hill in a central populated area to evoke strong contemplation and reflection.
