Sculpture
This sculpture is located in behind of the Buchanan Towers and is about 7 feet tall, and it has the shape of a chair. When placing this sculpture, they covered the concrete base with grass so the chair will appear to be emerging from the ground. They did it so this sculpture would appear to everyone that this chair has been grown from the ground of the Western Washington University, which might also implement the thoughts of educational area, that is facing the entire campus. And this sculpture has been made to represent the Western’s Academic Instructional Center (AIC).

Artist
David Ireland, born in Bellingham, Washington, completed a Bachelors of Applied Art at California College of the Arts, graduating in 1953. Before finishing his graduate degree at the San Francisco Academy of Art, he spent two decades working various jobs including serving in the US military and as a safari guide in East Africa. After living in New York for a year Ireland moved back to San Francisco to become a full time artist and key member of the Bay Area Conceptualist movement. Much of his art combines sculpture, architecture, painting and performance with a focus in scale and vision. He is best known for his house at 500 Capp Street which served as environmental artwork, a social sculpture and was his personal residence.
