Stadium Piece – Bruce Nauman

“If you really what to do it, you do it. There are no excuses.” – Bruce Nauman

About the Artist: Bruce Nauman was someone who liked to push boundaries, challenge norms, and create things that might be out of the ordinary. He seems to play with the concept of opposites quite a bit. For example, he does a lot of art work that contradicts the inside/outside or the public/private kind of social constructs. He is considered to be one of the most innovative artists living today. Due to his inquisitive nature, Nauman has been able to explore installation, sculpture, printmaking and other mediums of art by challenging the role of an artist in artists’ studio.  Nauman was born in Indiana and started his higher education career in the field of Physics and Mathematics until finally committing to the world of art and going for his Masters of Fine Arts in 1964 from University of Carolina. After graduating he eventually found his home in New Mexico, where he began to investigate the purpose of a modern artist.

Stadium Piece: What some might not know about the “Stadium Piece” is that it originally was made for University of New Mexico was the structure ended up being rejected because the students used the space for activities. Nauman really felt a connection with an empty field between Parks Hall and environment studies building and realized that the Stadium piece would be a perfect place as it still gives the students of Western space for activities and stays down the pathway from Rec Center that was being built at the time. Nauman wanted stadium piece to be something that turns the person experiencing it into a performer. It was also an experiment of his curiosity that that impacts the campus as a whole as well as opens up boundaries for students to feel like they are performing on a bigger scale. Stadium piece is meant to unite two opposites together. In this specific situation it brings the differences between football players and fans together by presenting a structure similar to bleachers in the middle of a big wide open field. Stadium Piece celebrates the world the fans submerge themselves in while watching these games but also gives importance to the player’s role as well by being placed in a big open space.
