In Songbirds and Bells, you are immersed in the calm serenity of the Sehome Hill Arboretum. The birds chirp faintly in the trees above, as you lay in a suspended net. When the clock strikes 3’oclock the campus church bells begin to ring. They play a droning and historically beautiful jingle. Ever since time was invented as a concept, people have constructed many different ways of “telling time”. In an era when there were no smart watches, internet, or phones, people used methods such as church bells, sundials, and hourglasses. I think there is a profound beauty in these methods. With church bells, you can literally hear the sound of time passing. To me, Songbirds and Bells conveys the idea that no matter how much time matters to human beings, in nature it will still continue to pass the same as in our everyday lives.
