I have compiled four influential figures who have given me some sort of inspiration into my own understandings and beliefs of ethical journalism, as well as medias portrayal of political thought and the current war on press. With my experience at Western ending after the fall and four years under my belt, I have been exposed to some of the most brilliant minds in political science and journalism. Minds that tackle monumental topics in elegant and extraordinary ways and come face to face with conflict in ways to be envious of, and to look up to.
With this blog, I am hoping to use the unique and powerful voices of four public figures that I look up to for numerous reasons, who we covered in class, to discuss the topic of sensitive reporting, investigative reporting and the overall concept of the war on press which is fueled throughout Trump’s current presidency. I am hoping to shift from a biographic summary into their influence and how they might view our current news media climate if they were alive today.
My team is made up of three influential women and Walter Cronkite as my wildcard. The women I chose to discuss are Susan B. Anthony (publisher), Elizabeth “Nellie Bly” Cochrane (reporter) and Dorothea Lange (depression-era photographer). The way in which these women excelled in their journalistic professions during a time of great inequality and misogyny is something I am inspired by. Anthony, Bly and Lange set examples for future journalism by uncovering truths and letting nothing stand in their way of creating change.
My essential research question and what I will be exploring throughout my posts is as follows: I will be dealing with the issue of the war on press, focusing on how influential American journalists- Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cochrane, Dorothea Lange and Walter Cronkite- helped to shape news media. I will be focusing specifically on the coverage of sensitive content (Great Depression-era working class, wars, government corruption, etc.) and the shaping of investigative journalism in American history, transitioning then into a discussion on how war on press has shifted in our current society.
To give you a little glimpse into what I mean by “war on press”:
“In his first 100 days, Trump has openly declared the media the “enemy of the people,” and has targeted individual reporters and news outlets for criticism and retribution on the basis of their reporting, a tendency also shown by some of his staff. He has also repeatedly accused the media of intentionally lying and fabricating their stories and sources, and his Administration has attempted to undermine the press’ ability to operate in other ways, including through restrictions on access to White House staffers and events.”[1]
I will be attempting to identify both how my figures have helped to shape news throughout history, as well as how their skills and characteristics might help alter the perceptions that our current government and society have in the media. Their influences in major eras of American history can prove just how influential and vital ethical and truthful reporting is for a transparent society and government.
