If Anthony were alive today, she would be appalled by language that is used when speaking about women and minorities, especially from our government. She was a powerful figure in a time where females were consistently torn down by men, and where society didn’t see them as equals, and while nineteenth century newspaper actively worked to silence their movement, she actively worked toward her support to get females in the positions of editors and policy makers to make an actual change in time.2
“Even though such highly capable and remarkably resourceful women as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Lucy Stone were ably leading the intriguing and potentially far-reaching movement by the mid-nineteenth century, the American institution charged with informing the country’s citizenry about social and political trends opted to treat this particular social movement- when it acknowledged the movement at all- with ridicule and hostility.” 2
Over time, the press helped to progress the women’s suffrage movement through increased circulation of various newspapers and other informative content.2 Stanton and Anthony were both at the forefront of this, and that rationale drove me to selecting her as an essential member on my dream team. Through informing the public of common and important issues facing the society, the movements gained support and recognition from members in society who had a more significant role, and from there, progress was underway. 3
Anthony’s experience of women’s war with press during the nineteenth century could be essential to progressive discussion and development with our governments current war on press, from my perspective. If my team were to tackle this issue and American citizens lack of faith in press and news media, Anthony has the experience standing up to ‘the man’ and seeking both journalistic recognition and policy change.[2]
