Students, Social Media, and their Reading Habits

In the end, we received a little over 80 answers from students.  We analyzed 80 of those answers since a few answers had to be removed from the data set.  These answers were removed for various reasons.  Some students accidentally answered twice and others submitted joke answers.  One answer was from a high school student, and it was removed because we wanted to have data from a consistent group.  After the data was analyzed the results were as follows:

  • 79 out of 80 participants said they use social media
  • 82% of students spend at least 4 hours per week on social media apps

  • 59% of students spend less than 2 hours per week reading for pleasure
  • Majority of students check social media frequently and are easily distracted by social media while studying

  • 61% of students that spend more than 6 hours a week on social media spend less than 2 hours a week reading for pleasure
  • 50% of students that spend less than 4 hours a week on social media spend more than 2 hours reading for pleasure
  • 91% of students that spend more than 6 hours a week on social media are often distracted while reading
  • 75% of students that spend less than 4 hours a week on social media are not often or never distracted while reading
