Artist   Beverly Pepper

Sculpture   Normanno Wedge

Year   1980

Period

Type   Land Art

Medium  cast iron

Production   Beverly Pepper originally made the Normanno Wedge out of wood, but later had it transferred into cast iron.

Meaning  Beverly Pepper made the Normanno Wedge as a monument to tools and and the spiritual product of tools, civilization as we know it today. From one angle you see a column, from another it suggests an altar. The wedge is already 7’3″ in height but Pepper wanted it set up in students view so they placed it on a mound of grass for students to gaze up at and reflect on. (The works blend nature with industrial materials, as well as inviting the viewer to be a part of the work—”a total environment.” (4)

Location   Outdoor Sculpture Collection of Western Washington University’s south campus in Bellingham, Washington, USA
