Norman Warsinske was inspired by African hex signs when creating Wall Relief. Hex signs were usually painted on buildings as a form of protection to ward off evil. However, he does not call his piece a hex sign instead he describes it as a “growth form.” We have taken this concept to inspire our own growth forms that pertain to our present day life.

Angela: Cycle of life

• I was inspired by Warsinske’s circular composition and ran with the idea of growth forms as a symbol of nature. Especially the Fibonacci sequence we see so often in plants. Black is a color of protection and represents the notion that with life comes death.

Malynne: Controlled Chaos

• This sign is to remind myself that chaos can be controlled and not always a negative aspect in someone’s life. The black color inspired by Warsinske’s dark grey, is meant for warding off negative emotions and anxieties. This sign brings peace in knowing you don’t always have to have your sh** together.
