The Grand Disappearing Act

BFA students Teresa Grasseschi and Megan Harmon will be displaying their brand new work at the Corridor Gallery in the Tashiro Kaplan building in May. Please join them on First Thursday, May 5th from 5-9 pm for their opening reception.

The work will be on display May 5th through the 28th open for viewing Fridays and Saturdays from 12-5pm.

Photo 390 & SEM Get Together!

Check out this kick-ass diptych by student Joe Rudko! Have you stopped by “The Reconfigured Landscape: Miniature/Mammoth” yet? The exhibition features scanning electronic microscope artwork from the Art 390 Black and White Photo II students and is currently on display in the foyer of SMATE!

The exhibit is up until March 15, so take a break from studying and long hours in the art building for some adventuresome artwork!

Labyrinth 2011

Check out the artwork of some awesome classmates and other WWU student and alumni artists in this year’s annual exhibition of Labyrinth, hosted by the VU Gallery and the Women’s Center!

Congrats to 490 students Allison Avery, Alyssa Putnam, Joe Rudko, Laurel Kam, and Teresa Grasseschi for all being featured in the exhibition, and many in the publication as well!

You can pick up your free copy of this year’s Labyrinth, enjoy some poetry and prose, eat free food and mingle with fellow artists, writers, and gallery patrons at the Release Party, this Thursday from 6-8pm in the VU Gallery!

Whirling Waves and Wolfbats

Printmaker, installation and performance artist Dennis McNett is at the VU Gallery! Dennis is well known for his elaborate parades, intricate screenprints and woodblocks, giant Viking ship sculptures and so much more.

The Viking Union Gallery is hosting McNett for an exhibition of prints, skateboards, tapestries, and a new custom-made Viking ship installation. If you have yet to stop by the gallery this week, Dennis and a group of art student volunteers have been working together to construct the ship and additional components for the Grand Opening Reception this Thursday, 2/3/11 from 6-8pm in the VU Gallery!

The culmination of all of this construction will take place during the reception with the unveiling of the finalized exhibit, ship, and a procession of students adorned with Nordic-inspired masks, helmets, and headdresses. This procession will end in the sacrifice of a giant war eagle pinata… Definitely an event you won’t want to miss.

Your professors still make art! Come check out some amazing work by WWU Art Department faculty including Elsi Vassdal Ellis, Sharron Antholt, Cynthia Camlin, Ben Moreau, Patrick McCormick, Seiko Purdue, Lisa Larrabee and more.

Gallery Attendant Lindsey Schmid says, “There’s a lot of books and stuff you can touch! It’s a chance to see who’s teaching the students, and learn a lot about professors.”

“Every two years the Western Gallery features the work of the Department of Art faculty in the areas of studio and design. An opportunity for the community to look into the faculty’s current projects, the show features a selection of works that explore contemporary attitudes and individual areas of research with traditional and new media.” -Western Gallery

You’ve Got Mail!

Looking for today’s hot topics in art? Apparently, mail is in fashion! Three galleries in Bellingham are hosting mail-themed gallery exhibitions this winter; Mindport’s “Write ON: Going Postal in the Age of E-Mail”, the Viking Union Gallery’s “You’ve Got Secrets!”, and Jinx Art Space’s “Postal”.

Check out Tallie Jones’ exploration of old correspondences at Mindport, submit a secret or two to VU Gallery’s PostSecret inspired show, and buy a stamp for your submission to Jinx’s mail freedom of expression.
