Reading response To light and shadow

I found this chapter portion of the reading particularly helpful though the explanations  of front and back lighting, Bracketing(shooting the same still t different exposures). how shooting at different times of the day affects light color. (which is linked to white balance) how high ISO’s are linked to noisy grainy images, reflecting and diffusing light…and how different variables such as texture shape color and angle will affect how the light bounces or softens. also how flashes can contribute to a cleaner light and sharp focus objects. this contributes to me having a fuller understanding of photshop and lightroom software. painting with light and shadows is a powerful tool for creating unique images …I hate to sound cliche’ but that is what i got out of the chapter.

response to Reframing Photography pages49-105

Hmm I don’t know really what to respond to this portion of reading except that it helped me understand viewfinders shutter speeds and focal planes a little more. It was nice to have F-stops and apertures and their relationship to depth of field further explained as well. the comparisons of DSLR’s and “point and shoots was laid out and easy to understand. i also appreciated the quick overview scanners printers and Photoshop controls. basically this portion of reading explained the basic of image making in its various forms to me.

Holga Response

I am very excited to get the opportunity to use a Holga.  I have had quite a bit of experience with them in the past but it has been a while since I have used one.  While I have a good grasp of the functionality of the camera, it is incredibly handy to have this packet full of useful advice.  The focal lengths are particularly helpful because the ones in the camera’s instructions are so horridly off.

Reading Response 3

I particularly enjoyed reading about the reproduction of photographs because I find the intersection of mass production/commercialism and art very interesting.  The invention of the negative film process was such a turning point in the ever evolving definition of what was and what wasn’t “art”.  Mass production changed everything.

Reading response 2

The reading on Light and Shadow was incredibly interesting.  I liked how the book focused not only on photography, but on many artistic mediums to portray the many different way light is utilized in art.  I would be very interested to experiment with some of the less conventional forms of light, such as projections and exaggerated shadows.

Holga Response

At the beginning of the quarter, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the Holga camera. I was just skeptical of it. And then I bought it and had no idea how to use it or what to do with it. But I heard the presentation on Michelle Bates and I started to get more excited about it. And when the reading was on it, I learned a lot of little things about the camera as well. I truly am excited to use a plastic camera to make some sweet prints. I want to experiment with double exposures, as well as nice single exposures.

As I was talking to people about the Holga, they said that color film for it is very fun too. So I am excited to play with that on the side of class!

Holga Response

At first I was not very excited about the Holga camera project, It seemed silly to use a crappy camera and lense, and I was not really sure what I would learn. After seeing Paul’s photos, I think this project will be pretty fun. He had some very cool images. I haven’t developed any images yet, so we’ll see. I find it intriguing that each Holga has it’s own personality, and each one can be quite different, with different light leaks and distortions.

Holga Response

This handout was pretty short but I liked reading it as an overview of Paul’s lecture. I thought it was interesting that Holga’s are special and used so much because of their relative simplicity and their quirks – things that make it a “lemon”. I have a SuperHeadz.Tokyo toy camera and love using it for the same reason. It’s nice to have something light that you can always carry with you. The handout also says to try and take pictures in bright sunlight. This will be difficult in Bellingham unless we keep getting random days/hours of sun.

Reading Response 3: Holga

I really enjoyed learning about a specific type of camera and seeing that we were all going to use the same one to create projects seems like a really neat idea to see how everybody handles our similar cameras.  I like the idea of basically going with whatever mistakes my camera might have and seeing what I can turn out using those to my advantage.  The Holgas seem like a really cool platform to teach from and I am excited about developing and making prints with the 120 film and its image quality.

Holga response

After researching about Michella Bates and reading the handout, it seems that the holga would be a interesting camera to use. Though it seems that there is a lot of imperfections with a holga camera, it still has a lot of good qualities. I would like to fully understand more about it with the talk tomorrow and be able to handle a holga first hand. I want to understand how a plastic camera can be so popular and why people would rather use it then a SLR camera. Though I am afraid of the light leakage, I hope that it will turn out good like those pictures taken by Michelle Bates.
