Mary Ellen Mark has been around for a long time but really enjoy her work; it is reminiscent Diane Arbus. One of my favorite series is called, Ward 81. In it, she documents the lives of the women’s mental health ward in Oregon. On her website, you have to click on the books link to view her work.

Reading response To light and shadow
I found this chapter portion of the reading particularly helpful though the explanations of front and back lighting, Bracketing(shooting the same still t different exposures). how shooting at different times of the day affects light color. (which is linked to white balance) how high ISO’s are linked to noisy grainy images, reflecting and diffusing light…and how different variables such as texture shape color and angle will affect how the light bounces or softens. also how flashes can contribute to a cleaner light and sharp focus objects. this contributes to me having a fuller understanding of photshop and lightroom software. painting with light and shadows is a powerful tool for creating unique images …I hate to sound cliche’ but that is what i got out of the chapter.

Holga Handout
When I first learned about the Holga camera project, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. It didn’t seem like a project that whould be as exciting as digital photography. However, after learning about the simplicity and functionality of the Holga, I am now rather excited to start. I think that because the camera is so simple and cheap, it allows for more creativity and experimenting, which is key to great artwork. The camera has a fun uniqueness that is attractive after you get used to it, and I now see why it is gaining popularity with art photographers.
Old Photos: Ancient Ruins
These were taken digitally about a year or two ago, near a park in central Maryland.
Fascinating how quickly old things can fall into ruin, and how quickly nature can take back from human civilization.
When we found what was very likely to be a Confessional Booth, we had a very good clue what the ruins used to be- some kind of Catholic Institution; a school, abbey, or church.
An otherwise good shot of the confessional, despite my mother’s head and jacket being a distraction.
Outside of the Confessional.
Inside the Confessional.
A place of worship, evidenced by the cross.
An altar, made of concrete and some rusting metal.
Most likely an empty fountain or pool, filled in and overgrown.
