This is the photographer that Garth recommended for me to look up. I really enjoyed this photo. I like to shoot windows, and this is a good inspiration.

Jordan Stead
As an aspiring designer, I feel it’s my duty to promote local creatives. I also hope they’ll be nice enough to return the favor one day [hah].
Jordan Stead is a friend of a friend. They recently teamed up to form ‘The Emerald Collective’ operating out of Seattle. I stumbled across these photos from the NYE Resolution show at WaMu Theater. As a huge NERO fan, I was drawn in by how well Jordan captured their style and energy. I also appreciate that he seems to have some intelligent commentary about the state of the Electronic music scene in the US. Enjoy!
Reading Assignment
The reading was overall an informative and helpful to operate our cameras as I am mostly used to using a relatively simple digital camera. Relating it to human eye sight was a smart idea as a connection for the reader and helpful to understand how cameras work. I now know the technical terms for the workings of the cameras and have the skills to operate it effectively with a few techniques to help make my photos interesting.
Reading Assignment
Wow. There’s nothing I love more than reading 50 pages of technical writing. There’s a very specific reading format I like to follow each time I have to do something like this:
(1) Start by flipping through the pages to see what’s in store.
(2) Progressively become more and more irritated that this lengthy pre-reading can’t be compressed in to three short sentences.
(3) Attempt to ‘skim’ 50 pages in 10 minutes, magically absorbing everything using that handy speed-reading technique you picked up in 7th grade accelerated reading.
(4) Allow the obsessive tendency to kick in…
and finally, (5) go back and carefully read through each ‘skimmed’ page, hoping to get by without dosing off more than a handful of times.
Forever-and-a-day-later, I can say I’m only a little bitter and picked up some handy camera knowledge that I could have used about 700 photos ago. All sarcasm aside, the reading had some good, comprehensive information to offer. I especially appreciated the short section at the end of the chapter covering aperture settings to apply to Part B of the assignment.
Reading Assignment 1
The readings were a much needed catch up for me. My photography experience is limited to working with my dad’s Sony Cybershot. I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by family members who own a lot of the equipment (my parents recently purchased a 5D and my sister has a Pentax that’s been sitting around for ages), but my knowledge is still lacking in the subject. I found not only the instructions for the SLR to be useful, but the comparison chart between film and digital to be rather enlightening. For someone who’s photography experience has been limited to digital, having the pros of film pointed out to me was very useful.
Marc Yankus
Marc Yankus has always been one of my favorite artists and recently he has begun to use his photography for book cover design. Doing design work myself, this sythesis of fine art photography and design is awesome.
Also his portraits.
Reading 1
I found the reading to be very direct and informational. I especially appreciate the reference tables as they categorized a lot of very useful detailed information. I found myself spending a lot of time reading and rereading the sections on DOF and circles of confusion. While I have a grasp of the basics I still get things all jumbled up in my head when I try to make sense of it sometimes so it was nice to have a clear, concise paragraph to set the record straight. I also found the comparative photographs of wide/50mm/telephoto images incredibly useful. The concept of what a wide angle vs telephoto lens captures is simple enough but the illustration helped to highlight the dramatic effect the lenses can have besides just simple cropping.
reading response
A few of the things I appreciated most from the assigned reading were the explanations of different lenses (I have multiple from past holidays and I slowly figure out how to use them and what they are to be used for), and the different formats cameras come in, plus the film. I have only worked with small format so it’ll be great to work with the holga camera soon. Figuring out the different parts of the camera (using the diagram in the book and in class) was good, building a language!
I have letters on the mind. Check out the full slide show below!

First-Person Perspective Transitions in Skyrim
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teCo6Qy8xxU?rel=0&w=640&h=360]
This guy uses the game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to make this video with unbelievably smooth transitions using odd in-game tricks and camera manipulation.
Reading Assignment 1
The reading was really informative with the parts about the basic workings of the SLR cameras. I especially find that helpful coming into this with little knowledge of them. All of the information about how the eye relates was really neat to read about even though I had heard of it before. The examples of different cameras was cool too and it was neat to see Garth’s name in there. All in all, it was a good reading selection to start the quarter with.
