Alice Aycock drew inspiration from the legends of Mt. Meru, roseapple trees, and water. You can see how she incorporated these three things into her sculpture from not only the name but how she designed the sculpture as well. The legend of Mt. Meru is a mountain is thought to be located in the center of the physical, metaphysical and spiritual universes, and is also thought to support both the heaven and hell. With the location of
Mt. Meru being located in both the Physical and spiritual realm it could represent how important it is to maintain balance in life, for both one’s mind and body. You can also see where Alice incorporates the rose apple trees into the sculpture through the ring that surrounds the center ring. The rose apple trees are resistant to the cold and wind, which are both common occurrences in Whatcom county.  The name that is given to this piece The rose apple trees surrounded by the oceans of the world is in many ways representative of its location at western, with all of the water and trees that is in and surrounds Whatcom County. It is also representing the students and teachers here at western and reminds us how important it is for everyone to not only focus on their studies but also their mental and
physical health.
