Keynote: Finding Ourselves in Euphoria
1:00 pm in Panel Room B (AW 204)

To be transgender is to be born into a body that cannot reflect or describe all that you are. To those that are or know trans people, it is easy to see the gifts and the magic that they bring into this world. Unfortunately, many are wrestling with motivations to be hateful and fearful rather than love and understand. More than 1 in 5 hate crimes in America are stemmed from anti-LGBT+ prejudice. It is more important than ever to build and protect spaces that uplift and celebrate trans people for their true, important, extraordinary selves.

This keynote presentation will shed light on the intersections between drag and transgender identity by honoring the elders that have paved the way to the progress of today. It will also highlight the roots and intentions behind Bellingham’s first and withstanding transgender drag show, “Euphoria,” created by Dizzy Phoria – a local trans nonbinary performer known for their creative, unique and empowering performances.

This presentation will end in an exploration of how one can use art as a tool for community connection, political resistance, and personal/collective healing.

Dizzy Phoria is a trans nonbinary performer based out of Bellingham, Wa. Dizzy started exploring drag in 2019 and has since then established themself as a dazzling and respected international performer and local community leader. read more…

They are the current reigning Grand Marquis of the Emerald City Kings Ball (an all drag king festival in Seattle, Wa), casted at Rumors Cabaret every Friday for QAF, and can often be found in other shows around Bellingham, Seattle and beyond as a special guest. They recently returned for the third consecutive year to WWU’s annual drag show and are a proud WWU alumnus. Dizzy created Euphoria in collaboration with the Blue Room in 2023 to offer a stage for trans drag artists to shine and all 18+ LGBT+ community members and allies to feel safe, seen and cherished.

Presentation: Costume Design and Cosplay: Are They That Different?
2:40 pm in AW 304

Cosplay isn’t an official major in most schools, unfortunately; but is costume design for theater that different from cosplay? Let’s look at the similarities and differences of how these two worlds may seem so far apart, but in actuality help each other out tremendously and how you can apply it to your career or hobby!

I’m a professional cosplayer and small business owner working on creating a safe space for people to learn, create and buy materials they need for their own cosplays. I’ve been in this field since I was 8 years old, and I don’t see myself doing anything else with me life. I’m passionate about this craft, and teaching others about it and how to do it as well!

Planetarium Shows: Queer Star Stories
2:00 pm in AW 304

Greek and Roman Mythology may have been sanitized in recent memory to wash away most of its queer content, but Queer Star Stories is here to bring them back in all their queer glory.

Astro Erin will be hosting both a short all-ages event during the Convention Hall Hours and a full-length 18+ event after-hours highlighting queer star stories of triumph, love, and friendship. The last part of the show will be an audience choice exploration of the night sky and Q&A!

Erin is a queer astronomer and planetarium presenter bringing astronomy (and cute queer Saturn pins and space-themed stickers) to the masses.

Presentation: Folklore, Fandom, and the Invention of the Acafan
12:30 pm in AW 210

More about Folklore, Fandom, and the Invention of the Acafan:

The development of academic fandom studies can be traced to work by queer and queer-adjacent graduate students in folklore, sociology, and cultural anthropology in the late 1980s on fandom, fanzines, vidding, and other fan creative expression. Come for the scholarly history, stay for the hot, hot tea on pre-internet fandom in the 1980s, and what happened when Worldwide Web 1.0 hit.

I am the Vice President of Enrollment and Student Services here at Western. Once upon a time I was a graduate student in folklore in the late 1980s, when Camille Bacon-Smith’s *Enterprising Women: Television Fandom and the Creation of Modern Myth* created acafandom.

WWU Game Design Club

Panel: Indie Game Dev with Heart 20 Games
2:00 pm in AW 303

WWU Game Design Club presents an indie game studio based out of Seattle and made up in part by alumni from WWU. We’ll be hearing from Ian (WWU 2022), Shell (WWU 2007), Jeremiah, and Louise about what it’s like being indie game developers and how they’re bringing queer identities into their game Heart of the Dungeon.

Heart 20 Games was formed to develop their game Heart of the Dungeon from a simple (out-of-scope) jam game into a fully-fledged narrative-driven fantasy action RPG. Roughly a year into development with 7 team members, they’re working hard to bring to life a colorful cast of dungeon monsters with complex and varied backgrounds.
