Our main program is our three-hour curriculum, presented in middle school and high school classrooms around the county. We teach young people how to strengthen their resilience, how to recognize if they or someone else may need support for their mental health, how to recognize warning signs of suicide and how to get help for themselves or a friend in a crisis. Students learn about resources available for help, including trusted adults, helplines, and more. We also offer other community events to raise awareness about mental well-being and suicide prevention in Whatcom County. MAD HOPE is always looking for volunteers!

Whatcom Youth Pride – 202

In 2018-2019, some educators, parents, community members and students came together with a shared goal of finding ways to celebrate and show support to LGBTQIA+ youth in Whatcom County. Whatcom Youth Pride (WYP) was born!

In June 2019, WYP hosted one of the nation’s first all-youth Pride Parade and Festivals. LGBTQIA+ youth and allies marched along a short parade route while the community lined the streets with signs and shouts of love and support. The day culminated in a large festival with LGBTQIA+ youth-focused/allied organizations tabling, food trucks, and a youth-led drag and talent show. Derailed a bit by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021, WYP returned better than ever in 2022 with a parade and festival that rivaled 2019. Join us as we continue to create celebrations and spaces for LGBTQIA+ youth in Whatcom County! WYP 2023 is just around the corner!

Caroline Sophia Hamel – 412*

She/her

My name is Caroline Sophia Hamel (she/her). I’m a queer (trans and pan) and neurodivergent author. I tend to write hopeful books focusing on mental health with queer and neurodivergent characters, and often queer romance. I’ve written two books: To Hold a Flower (book 1) and The Essence of Longing (book 2). They follow three characters: Liela, Dunet, and Myllia as they learn to love and accept themselves, figure out who they are, and grow as people. There are two main relationships. Liela and Dunet are sisters trying to develop a more genuine relationship and Liela and Myllia fall in love and have a multi-book, sweet and trusting lesbian romance that progressively explores more queer themes. I explore depression and other heavy mental health themes with Dunet, insecurity and unmasking neurodivergence with Liela, and empowerment and growing into adulthood with Myllia. My books fluctuate in tone and themes, but always lean towards hope. They can be light and whimsical or a bit heavy at times, but I hope you can find acceptance and feel seen in my characters.

There’s no such thing as too many accessories. At least that’s the point I aim to make. I can’t imagine living a life where I’m not making and sharing creativity and joy. Earrings, chains, and handbags are never a centerpiece of an outfit, but they can still be flashy! My items are eccentric and creative, and hopefully can spark some new ideas for you too.

Media with Queer Ethos: Qualitative vs. Quantitative Representation

On my channel, I talk about the nuance in the nerdy, and focus on issues facing the LGBTQ community, transgender specific community, women, nonbinary and autistic folks as well as other social and political issues through and within geek topics, with an eye to the most vulnerable. My goal is try to create a space where we can talk about hard issue but in a way that is constructive, positive, welcoming, and educational, and still never loses sight of the joy and love for each other that brought us together in the first place.

The trend of majority wlw in children’s media Talk

My talk discusses the majority of LGTBQ+ couples being lesbian/sapphic couples in children’s media and lists examples of LGTBQ+ couples in children’s media as well as theories about why this is the case and hopes for the future of LGTBQ+ couples in media.

As someone who plans to work with children in the future as well as enjoying children’s media, I am passionate about the representation in said media. I believe that there should be more representation in the couples children see as well as letting kids know that not everybody wants a relationship or may be romantic.

Reading Between the Lines: Queercoding vs. Queerbaiting Talk

With the continuous expansion of explicitly LGBTQ+ media, debates surrounding the issue of “queerbaiting” have branched out of fandom spaces and into popular discourse. But what is the distinction between queerbaiting and queercoding, and what is the history that shaped these interconnected practices and still influences media and cultural mores today?

CWs: Discussion may include histories of homophobia/transphobia, gender and sexuality-based violence, systemic oppression, and adult language.

Why Is Kink At Pride? NSFW Talk

Hello! My name is Zelda and I go by she/her pronouns. I am an active member of the LGBTQ community. I have 2 fursuits named Cookie and Bubblegum which I love so much! Feel free to ask me any questions!

This talk is going to address some questions on why kink is allowed at pride, and how did it get there? In this talk, I am going to tell people about its significance to the LGBTQ community and its history of how kink got to pride in the first place, since when some people go to pride, they might be confused why it is there at all.
