The June 2019 Dance Magazine noted the great Roberto Bolle’s “retirement.” And also here: Dancer retirements. His special farewell performance with American Ballet Theatre was June 17, 2019. But he continues to perform in and produce ballet spectacles in Italy—which I get to see each summer that I’m working there. In Italy, Roberto Bolle is literally a household word, phenomenon, arts/sports hero. This past summer, leaving the ballet in a cab, the driver waxed eloquently on Bolle’s art and prowess. When he and his dancers perform, audiences are delirious. He’s a mesmerising dancer because he has such a commanding stage presence. Nobody says “I’d rather be here, right now, with you, dancing” better than Bolle. Fortunately, those spectacles will continue in Italy for years to come.
