Now almost a month after our Western Washington University “cook-in” and “dig-in,” our class is finally over and I’m posting a few pictures of sustainable food. Below, “natural” yoghurt drains, releasing its nutritious whey (for other lacto-fermentation projects), with soft cheese remaining (for spreads). Many recipes for this can be found in both FoodWISE and…

Glorious vegetables
Here’s a few favorites of mine—carrots and broccoli. FoodWISE, it helps to harvest at the peak of maturity—roots having been fed with nourishing manures and/or composts, maybe even with a celestial connection as in biodynamic practice. Understanding when and why and how our food arrives on our table really matters in the case of vegetables—…
Gorgeous cheese, freshest milk, “native” cultures
Gorgeous cheese—it’s cheesemaking time again! Kilele (mom of triplets, Francis, Leo, Clare) and Sufu (mom of singleton, Big Agnes) are producing beautiful milk—high in fat and protein. The milk is ripened with cultures, and some whey saved from the previous batch of cheese. Coagulant added, later cut into curds, and eventually whey separated to reheat…
Beautiful vegetables
Taking a little time from research and writing, beautiful vegetables are a must-have. if we all can agree on one thing, it’s eat more veggies! Here, cabbage and beets…other root veggies. Recipe for “Italian greens” is on p. 184 FoodWISE!

FoodWISE eating on a budget
I read from FoodWISE, introducing whole farming systems (Gigi reads FoodWISE). I mention speaking with a wonderfully inquisitive, knowledgeable, and articulate group of students today—Net Impact at Western Washington University—about eating on a budget. It’s not difficult to do! And, yes, it can be FoodWISE! • Many of us can get by with less food….
Newest installment, Gigi reads from FoodWISE (how she got it all wrong, early on)
Gigi Berardi continues reading from FoodWISE, the introduction. She explains how she got wrong nutritional messages of the 1990s, but embraces a more WISE approach today—choosing whole foods and farms, information with reliable science, sustainable food plans for the household, as well as the planet, and experience over second-hand information.
Reading from FoodWISE, Day 3—Only 141 more days to go (+ recipes!)
I’m pleased to present the next video file, Gigi Berardi Reads FoodWISE I’m reading from the book (although the audio book was released yesterday—honestly, I get very emotional when I hear it read by Julie Slater), and commenting on personal resilience. Also, please take a look at this important article in the Guardian—building adaptive capacity…

The FoodWISE audiobook has just been released! The audiobook was going to be released later in April. But, given the current public health crisis and with so many people isolating at home, we asked the distributor to fast track the release. I hope you will consider getting the audiobook—with Julie Slater’s beautiful narration. It is…
